We keep everything on google calendars - one for each family member - and it gets synced to my phone. But, like you, I'm visual and I must write something down if I am ever going to remember it. So I made a little command center in my kitchen (fancy white board). Each Sunday I write on the white board the upcoming calendared events for that week - each person has their own dry erase color. The whiteboard is kid height so they can look at the "week at a glance" too. It has been enormously helpful for us to remember not only the big things (doctor appointments, etc) but also things like "take cookies to Charlotte's class." Plus I love the little notes the kids add to the calendar.
